It’s St. Baldrick’s time again!
This is my dear friend Bill Coyle and his wonderful daughter, Maddie. There are three things I love about Bill: he hits a golf ball further than any 63-year-old has a right to; he has a cat-that-caught-the-canary twinkle in his eye that’s infectious; and he always – ALWAYS – manages to find the silver lining in every dark cloud.
That last characteristic is largely due to his wife, Sue. Like me, Bill managed to marry a woman who defines what “better half” means.
As you can tell from the photo, Maddie’s inherited all those wonderful qualities from her parents. She’s everything you’d want in a daughter – kind, intelligent, compassionate, beautiful, and caring.
But instead of getting ready for graduation from 8th grade later this year, Maddie is spending the next several weeks undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Not fair and not fun.
Yet, she begins and ends each treatment with that same smile on her face that you see in the photo. And the prognosis for a complete recovery is excellent. Cancer is tough, but Maddie and her family are tougher. Absolutely inspirational.
I am once again shaving my head to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation – the organization that has raised millions of dollars to fund research to prevent and treat children’s cancer, and help families make it through the long and arduous treatment process. I can’t think of a more noble mission.
This year, I am dedicating my fundraising efforts to Maddie, and I hope you’ll support me by opening your hearts and wallets. These funds make a difference and will help result in a cure for the cruelest forms of cancer – those that affect the most innocent among us.
