Doing good…because they have to?
September 6, 2011If there was a glaring example of the difference between fraternal life insurers and our commercial cousins, it’s featured in this article from National Underwriter (“California: Insurers Show Off Their Good Works”). Nothing says commitment to the community like “we do this because we have to.” It reminds me of Lily Tomlin’s telephone operator character who – in the days before deregulation – said: “We don’t care; we don’t have to. We’re the phone company!” While the insurers mentioned in the article can take pride in their community “investments,” you somehow know their heart just isn’t in it. That’s about a 180 degree difference from the fraternal model. Not only do we provide similar financial support to individuals and organizations, but that support is driven by – and frequently delivered by – our members in the communities in which they live and work. Commercial insurers could never dream of asking their policyholders to stock the shelves of a food pantry, volunteer at a senior care center, or drive someone they didn’t know to chemotherapy treatment. We do that every day – and if folks knew that they had an option to purchase their life insurance and annuities from organizations that do more than “invest” in community service because a regulator forces them to, they would beat a path to our doors. How are you communicating this message to your members, your agents, and all those folks who should be members but aren’t? I’d love to hear from you.
