January Road Trips Set the Stage for 2010 Initiatives
I spent the last few days in Louisiana meeting with NFCA’s newest member society, checking out the location for the association’s 2012 Annual Meeting, and speaking to an enthusiastic group of fraternalists and FICs at the Louisiana Fraternal Congress meeting. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of how things went…
Knights of Peter Claver – This society has been around since 1909, but just became a member of NFCA this year, and we are thrilled to have them in the fold. The society’s common bond is African-American Catholics and its fraternal activities focus on providing all kinds of financial and volunteer support to churches across the country. Did you know that there are more than two million African-American Catholics? And while the Knights of Peter Claver have barely scratched the surface of this potential membership pool, the society’s leadership is committed to enhancing both its fraternal activities and financial services offerings to make membership in the organization more attractive to both current members and prospects. They seemed genuinely happy to be a part of the association and are looking forward to taking advantage of the NFCA’s products and services, starting with a visit from our Fraternal Consultant Response Team. You’ll have a chance to meet the society’s Supreme Knight, Gene Phillips, Sr., at the NFCA Presidents Section meeting in April.
And speaking of Section meetings… Have you registered for one or more of the various NFCA Section meetings coming up from March – June? These are excellent ways to network with peers, sharpen your professional skills, and get the most important information on fraternal operational and political issues that are not available from any other source. Just as important as registering for YOUR Section meeting – Presidents, Secretaries/HR, Fraternal/Communications, Investment, or Actuaries – is to make sure at least one representative of your society is registered to attend the Section meeting that applies to them. It’s a great way to reward a deserving employee for a job well done and to boost the morale and professionalism of your most important executives. The more attendees at each of the Section meetings, the more valuable these meetings are to the participants and YOUR society. 2012 Annual Meeting – The Sheraton New Orleans will be the site of the 2012 NFCA Annual Meeting, so mark the dates on your calendar - September 13-15, 2012 - start saving up your Mardi Gras beads, and plan to join us in the Big Easy. Who Dat!!!
Louisiana Fraternal Congress Meeting – Small but enthusiastic is the only way to describe the participants at the Louisiana Fraternal Congress meeting. The most important lesson I learned? The three major NFCA member societies doing business in the state – Knights of Columbus, Modern Woodmen of America, and Woodmen of the World/Omaha – contribute far more in direct financial support and volunteer hours IN LOUISIANA ALONE than Congress would raise by taxing the entire fraternal system. That’s one of the messages we need to communicate to public policy makers and I’m confident that my new friends along the Bayou – especially the FICs, God love them – will embrace the opportunity to make sure that every state and federal legislator fully understands the value of our contributions to those who need it most.
